WWWRESTORE / GETTING STARTED

Getting started

Find available captures, choose what to keep, and restore a local browsing copy.

  1. Enter your website and date range

Open wwwRestore and enter a domain such as example.com. Set the start and end dates. Choose whether to include subdomains, then select Find captures.

  2. Review pages and files

Filter by original address or file type. Uncheck resources you do not want, or use Keep visible and Exclude visible for the current filtered list.

  3. Choose your restoration options

Separate yearly versions and filling missing assets from other periods are enabled by default. Script removal and animation/media removal, including GIFs, are unchecked. You can change these choices.

Asset borrowing searches the same URL in other periods within the selected range plus the chosen number of years. HTML pages are not borrowed across periods.

  4. Select an output folder

Choose where to save your browsing copies. The default is Documents\wwwRestored-webpages. New runs create a separate folder and preserve previous exports.

  5. Restore and review

Select Restore website. Follow the Activity panel and bottom status for progress and wait reasons. When complete, choose Open restored site. Check recovery-report.json for recovered and missing resources.

  6. Fill gaps with your own files

In Replacement files, enter the original asset URL and choose a local replacement. You can import missing asset URLs from a recovery report, then start a new restoration.

Save your project

Save/open project keeps your capture inventory, selections, settings, and replacement paths. If you change the domain, dates, or subdomain scope, find captures again. If you move replacement files, update their paths.

A few practical limits

Recovery depends on archive availability. Annual copies may combine dates; scripts and interactive features may not work. Current limits include 100,000 capture rows, 5,000 resources per period, and 40 MB per download.
