Scope and Basic Information
wwwRestore is a Windows application that retrieves available website captures from Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine and creates local, browsable static copies. This policy explains how the application processes information when you search for captures, restore websites, save projects or request support.
Types of Data Processed
- Archive requests: Domains, requested URLs, selected date ranges and whether subdomains are included.
- Archived content: Capture metadata, pages, images, stylesheets and other recovered resources. Archived content may contain personal information originally published on the source website.
- Local project information: Capture selections, exclusions, restoration options and paths to replacement files. Saved projects may include local file paths that reveal a Windows username or folder names.
- Local preferences: Appearance preferences and acceptance of the application’s usage notice.
- Store information: License status, trial status, add-on entitlements, expiry dates and product prices supplied through Microsoft Store services when available.
- Support information: Contact details, messages, screenshots or diagnostic information you voluntarily send to us.
The current application does not include developer-operated analytics, advertising trackers or automatic uploads of projects, recovered content or crash reports. It does not require a separate wwwRestore user account.
Purposes of Processing
Information is processed to find and retrieve archived resources, create local restorations and recovery reports, remember preferences, reopen projects, check Store entitlements and respond to support requests. We do not sell personal information or use project content for advertising.
Mode and Place of Processing
Restoration processing, project storage and output generation take place on your computer. Archive requests are sent over HTTPS to web.archive.org. Internet Archive receives the requested domains or URLs, date filters and ordinary connection information such as your public IP address and the application’s user-agent identifier. Requests for an individual resource may include its full URL, including query parameters. Avoid submitting URLs that contain credentials, private tokens or sensitive information.
The archive downloader restricts requests to Internet Archive and does not follow download redirects to live source websites. Opening exported content in a browser is a separate action; following external links or enabling retained scripts may cause your browser to contact third-party services.
Where Microsoft Store integration is available, the application uses Microsoft services for license checks, product prices and purchase requests. Microsoft handles account and payment processing; wwwRestore does not directly collect your payment-card details.
Third-Party Services
Internet Archive and Microsoft process information under their own policies. See the Internet Archive Terms of Use and Privacy Policy and the Microsoft Privacy Statement. Their processing may take place outside your country. wwwRestore is independent of, and is not endorsed by, Internet Archive.
Local Storage, Reports and Retention
Original downloads are cached in %LOCALAPPDATA%\wwwRestore\cache. Preferences and usage-notice acceptance are stored locally for the current Windows user. Project files are saved where you choose, and restored websites and recovery reports are written to your selected output location.
Recovery reports can contain original URLs, capture dates, recovery outcomes and references to replacement files. Treat projects and reports as potentially sensitive when sharing them.
Local files remain until you remove them. Creating another restoration does not automatically delete earlier exports or the download cache. Uninstalling the application may leave projects, exports or cached files behind. To remove them, close the application and delete the relevant files and cache folders. Cloud-synced folders and backups may retain additional copies under your chosen provider’s settings.
Information you send for support is retained only as long as needed to handle the request and any applicable recordkeeping obligations.
Device Access and Permissions
The application uses network access for archive retrieval and Store services, and file access to read selected projects and replacement files and write caches, preferences, reports and exports. These are desktop application operations and may not each trigger a separate Windows permission prompt.
The current application does not monitor the clipboard or request camera, microphone, contacts, precise location or social-media account access.
Security
Archive downloads use HTTPS. Local files depend on your Windows account, device security, folder permissions and backup settings; wwwRestore does not add its own encryption to projects, caches or exports. Use appropriate device protection and take care when sharing recovered content. No storage or transmission method can guarantee absolute security.
Your Choices and Rights
You choose the domain, dates, captures, exclusions, output folders and replacement files used for a restoration. You can cancel an operation and remove locally stored files. Cancellation does not undo requests already sent or automatically remove files already created.
For information you have provided directly to us, contact the privacy address above to request access, correction or deletion, or to exercise other rights available under applicable law. We cannot delete information held independently by Internet Archive, Microsoft or other providers; direct those requests to the relevant provider.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this policy to reflect changes in the application or our information practices. The revised policy will show its updated date. Where applicable law requires notice or consent for a change, we will provide it before the relevant processing begins.
